community garden at waiariki institute
Those of us currently involved have our own gardens and are gardeners already. We are looking for a framework to engage the local community and fulfil both our needs and those of the potential users. Currently, we benefit from the use of Waiarki's facilities, particularly the large greenhouse with a mist bench, and the constant overseeing of watering in term time by the Horticultural Tutor at Waiariki.
We have been able to buy our own seed, provide our own cuttings and composts, each exchanging seedlings and propagated plants, essentially cared for when we can't. Each of us has been able to grow plants for our own gardens and projects elsewhere, and have enough surplus to plant in the Community Garden at Waiariki Institute.
A small but active team of volunteers regularly meet at the Garden, usually on a Thursday in Term time, and more enthusiastic helpers and learners are always welcome!
