PERMACULTURE NEW ZEALAND is having their annual hui on Queens Birthday (29th - 31st May) weekend in Te Teko. Check out the PINZ website for more information. http://www.permaculture.org.nz/

PERMACULTURE WORKSHOPS  In conjunction with Permaculture in New Zealand (PINZ), Eastbay REAP will be hosting series of workshops including build a roundhouse, build a pizza oven base and build a pizza oven at Tu Teao Marae, Te Teko:

  • Build a Roundhouse A roundhouse is a round framed house designed using locally available materials.  During the workshop a 5 metre diameter roundhouse will be built.  There are many uses of a roundhouse.  You are only limited by your imagination!  During the workshop a 5 metre diameter roundhouse will be built.  In a few hours bare poles will be transformed into the frame of the roundhouse.  This house will then be finished by lashing on tarpaulins. Friday 29th May, 9.30 – 3.00pm, at Tu Teao Marae, Te Teko.  Cost is $40.00.  10 places only. To register phone Eastbay REAP on (07) 308 4098
  • Build a Urbanite Pizza Oven Base The ‘build a urbanite pizza oven base’ workshop is being facilitated by Regan Pryor and Peter West.  Recycled ‘urbanite’ footpaths are an abundant free resource for building walls, benches, paths and pizza oven bases.  In this workshop your will learn how to create a pizza oven base using recycled footpath concrete.  Thursday 28 May from 9.30am – 3.00pm at Tu Teao Marae, Te Teko.  This workshop is free.  To register phone Eastbay REAP on (07) 308 4098.
  •  Build a Pizza Oven  Pizza ovens can be used to bake a huge range of breads, meats and pastries.  Come along and learn how to create a pizza oven from local clay, sand, pumice, bricks and roofing tiles.  Really efficient wood-burning ovens can be made from the natural materials that we have right here in the Bay of Plenty. These ovens can be used to bake a huge range of breads, meats and pastries.  They are fun to use and most people enjoy being around them, watching the flames and feeling the heat.   Perfect for a marae as there is normally a lot firewood resource available and they are an efficient way to cook food and foster community.  Friday 29 May from 9.30am – 3.00pm at Tu Teao Marae, Te Teko.  This workshop is free.  To register phone Eastbay REAP on (07) 308 4098.

REAF in OPOTIKI
Dear friends, I sent out an email a week ago now, asking for feedback to go to the Opotiki Council to help in  their current 10 yr planning process re the Opotiki Community Reef.(For fishing) Thanks to those who have already taken the time to respond. Submission cut off date is this coming Friday 22. If you could select your most preferred option, copy and paste it into an email to tracyd@odc.govt.nz , then Council will count this as a submission and respond accordingly. Add in your own comments and reasons too if you wish. There is no need to attend hearings in person. Your emailed say will count.

  1. I think the Council should do nothing about the Opotiki Community Reef opportunity.
  2. I would like to see the Council place annual orders for reefs. This work should be budgeted for out of Council rates income and the reef location(s) distributed to Opotiki residents.
  3. I think reef building off Opotiki should be part of a ten year growth strategy for Opotiki. I’d like to see Council collaborate with REAF Ltd and attract outside funding to build the entire Opotiki Community Reef.

Good fishing, Lloyd Hosken. REAF WEBSITE http://www.reaf.org.nz/index.html
