whakatane fairtrade 2011

Trade Aid products from Michelle's continue to be the first choice for me, as Trade Aid ONLY sell Fair Trade products, and Michelle is supporting the local economy in many and various healthy and sustainable ways. Countdown wins hands down for its remarkable selection of Fairtrade chocolate.

Whakatane Pak n Save was runner up in the 2010 national Fairtrade Supermarket of the Year Awards - nominated by yours truly because they took the initiative stocking FT Bananas, and all their FT products were a better price than elsewhere in town. Kapai Whakatane Pak n Save!

[The listings below are only a rough guide as product lines seem to be coming and going more often than I'm in town these days, but I have spotted a few FT bargains in Countdown]

ADDITIONAL NOTES on PRODUCTS

This guide should help you to easily source FT products, but watch out!  Some of the PRODUCERS listed offer only one FT certified (cert) product amongst their vast range.  The FT Foundation charges a 2% fee to use it's logo, based on the wholesale coffee price, so may be the reason behind non-certification, but as consumers we may view certification as a guide to authenticity.  Trade Aid have been selling Fair Trade goods since the 70's; the Fairtrade cert logo was introduced into NZ only a few years ago.

Atomic have four blends; two are FT cert, two are not (60-70% FT and increasing).
Cadbury - One FT chocolate in massive range
Cafe Haus - Three ground coffees in the range at Warehouse; One FT
Caffe L'Affare have many types of coffee in their range, but only one FT cert.
Eden now have two Fairtrade blends
Excelso -  At least one FT in range
Fixation - One FT in range
Fusion - One FT in range
Gravity also have many types of coffee in their range, but only one FT cert.
Green & Blacks offer a FT chocolate bar and cocoa, but sell other products not FT, but all are Organic cert.
Hummingbird have no cert on their labels.  Trade Aid say they are FT
Organico  - ALL products FT and organic
Robert Harris - Many coffees, two FT
Scarborough Fair -  ALL products FT, but not all are organic
Switch - ALL products FT and organic.  At Vendor
Trade Aid - ALL products FT and working towards organic
