Designing with Nature: Lessons from Pedal Power
7.00pm - 9.00pm at REAP house, 21 Pyne St, Whakatane.

Nelson will be presenting a powerpoint presentation entilitled ‘Design with Nature: Lessons from Pedal Power Farm’ that tells the story of building a low-budget, organic, energy independent homestead in rural New Hampshire, USA. It will include information on design principles, building soil fertility, managing water, building with local resources, edible landscaping, and creative reuse (dumpster diving).
Nelson Lebo is an award-winning environmental educator with 18 years teaching experience. He has been an organic farmer and green builder for the last ten years. He is trained in organic land care, ecological design/build, eco-renovation and holds a Permaculture Design Certificate. Nelson has worked as a design consultant and educator in the USA, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, India and New Zealand. He is the author of ‘The Two-Wheeled Cowboy; A Man, His Bike, and a Land as Big as the Sky’. Nelson is currently pursuing a PhD in permaculture education at the University of Waikato.
Nelson bought a run-down farm in rural New Hampshire, USA. He spent the next eight years developing one of the most sustainable properties in the United States. Using a combination of energy efficient technology and high quality (human powered) hand tools, he developed a lifestyle with a miniscule carbon footprint. His 220 year-old farmhouse used less than one kilowatt of electricity (generated by solar panels) per day. Nelson developed design strategies and management techniques that can be adopted by anyone who wants to save money, save energy and shrink their carbon footprint.
