fairtrade fortnight feedback 2009

A huge THANK YOU to all who have supported Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and beyond!  Your purchases are making a difference to the quality of life for many in developing countries.

“The world's poorest people have the lightest carbon footprints, yet are the people whose food security, livelihoods and homes are most threatened by climate change and environmental destruction.  Trade Aid encourages the production of items that have a minimal impact on the environment while creating terms of trade that ensure these processes remain sustainable for future generations.”
(Trade Aid Environmental Justice leaflet)

A major bonus for Whakatane is that Michelle's Health and Nutrition Shop on Boon Street is now stocking a full range of TRADE AID consumables – including Tea, Coffee, Cocoa AND Chocolate  so we can buy Fairtrade from a completely  fair trading company AND support Michelle.   Think global, buy local!

Last year, many regulars at Vendor Cafe did not realise that they only served Fairtrade Organic (FTO)  Switch coffee. Raising the awareness of Fairtrade by screening Black Gold there had a direct impact immediately increasing sales. This year's bonus is that Vendor are now serving FTO (Trade Aid) hot chocolate too – and it's going down well.  Vendor are the only cafe in town serving FTO hot chocolate.
During my rounds of OXFAM Coffee Breaks, I completely sold out of Trade Aid hot chocolate, such was the demand!  Make sure you get to Michelle's and buy a pack – you won't be disappointed.

A few Cafes in the area are running competitions to win packs of Fairtrade coffee; You might still be in with a chance, so get on down there and buy yourself a coffee!

OXFAM coffee breaks took off again this year, after a slow start, and between us we raised around $100 for their work.  Actually, I did sell over $500 worth of Trade Aid goods, and around $700 of Micah Clothing products (and NOT all to myself!).   This is great news for the producers, and my conscience, so a huge thank you to all who purchased goods:

  • Ohope Beach School
  • Coastlands Pre-School
  • Whakatane High School
  • Rangitaiki School
  • EnvBOP

I hope you will continue to make the world a better place by buying ethical goods in the future.

Micah Clothing - Fairtrade & Organic CottonIf you missed out on the Micah Clothing range (Fairtrade and Organic), these can be purchased directly from http://www.micahclothing.co.nz/  . I have a better idea of the products and sizes now if you need any guidance.
