FOREST & BIRD AGM - Wed June 15th at the Masonic Lodge rooms Louvain Street 7.30pm. We are hoping to show the film Karearea The Pine Falcon (50min) which was nominated for Best Feature and Best NZ Film in 2008. Karearea is beautifully photographed, informative and moving; presented with drama, humour and poignancy. Everyone welcome to come and mix and mingle, nibbles and drinks served.

 

FOREST & BIRD WALK - Sat July 30th  - Walk, swim and BBQ at Kawerau. Those interested can join a group for a walk up Mt Putauaki. Meet 10am at Kawerau Information Centre. Pot luck BBQ at the hot pools afterwards. If the weather is really bad listen for cancellation on 1XX .

 

KIWI LISTENING WALKS - Whakatane Kiwi Trust are running organised nocturnal Kiwi Listening Walks throughout June on most Tues, Thurs and Sun nights 7:30pm to 9:30pm (excluding 14th-19th June) through Ohope Scenic Reserve. The cost is $15 per adult, $10 per child (6years old to 17 years old), $40 per family – 2 adults and 2+ children, no more than 12 people at a time. The walks start off with a short briefing and a listening to kiwi calls at the Department of Conservation building located on Valley Road, Whakatane, next to Destiny Church. TAURANGA MONTHLY FILM NIGHT - CARBON NATION, "a compelling and relevant film that illustrates how SOLUTIONS to climate change also address other social, economic and national security issues" screening at Rialto on Sun June 26th at 8pm. Jeanette Fitzsimons will lead a discussion on renewable energy after the film, but if she is called away to hearings, Dr Ian McLean, a local environmental biologist and Green Party candidate in Tauranga, will step up. Contact Ron on rlopert@xtra.co.nz for more information.

GREEN DRINKS - Tue 7th JuneGENETICALLY ENGINEERED TREES AT SCIONSHOULD YOU BE WORRIED? SCION’S Response - This presentation is a response to a presentation at the last Green Drinks function by a group opposing genetic engineering. Just prior to Christmas 2010 Scion was granted permission by the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) to plant up to 4000 genetically engineered trees at secure locations on Scion's Rotorua property.  A number of organisations have expressed serious concern over this decision and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council opposed the application.  Should you be concerned? At the last Green Drinks, a group of presenters opposing GE answered YES to this question.  Speakers on 7th June: Dr Warren Parker, Scion CEO, Dr Christian Walter, Scion Senior Scientist Future Forests, Dr Glenn Thorlby, Scion Molecular Biologist, Peter Bennett, Scion Maori Business Development Manager. ECO (Environment & Conservation Organisations) Annual Conference and AGM will be held in Auckland from 1st – 3rd July 2011. The theme this year is “Resilient Environment, Resilient Communities”. This reflects the need to look at strengthening NZ’s resilience in this rapidly changing world. More information HERE... or email eco@eco.org.nz.

NATIONWIDE TOUR of CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENTISTS - Climate scientist Jim Salinger will be joined by Professor Caroline Saunders from Lincoln University (well-known for her work on the carbon footprinting of agricultural exports) and business commentator Rod Oram to present a session on “Maintaining farm productivity and profits in an uncertain climate”. They’ll explain  …the nature of climate change, its impacts on New Zealanders’ health, properties, infrastructure, environment and rural industries. They will bring the latest information on climate change science and how it affects rural industries in regional New Zealand. Visiting Wanganui, Hawera, New Plymouth, Stratford, Gisborne, Napier and Hastings in May, with visits to Northland, Bay of Plenty/Waikato, Nelson/Marlborough, South Canterbury and Westland planned for July/August. Sounds like a very worthwhile session for anyone with an interest in agriculture, climate and New Zealand’s future. MORE... (but no dates for July/August yet)
