NotsetGREEN SCREENING is taking a month off in preparation for September/October Forest Film Festival (UN International Year of the Forests and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Forest Films), but I have spotted several interesting films I'd like to recommend this month, two at Cinema 5, suitable for children and broad-minded penguin-lovers, and a seriously good film in Tauranga. See below for more details.

Notset

NotsetTAURANGA MONTHLY FILM NIGHT - CARBON NATION, "a compelling and relevant film that illustrates how SOLUTIONS to climate change also address other social, economic and national security issues". DISTRICT PLAN - The Whakatane District Council draft Distict Plan is now out for consultation. One point of note Section 5.3.18 is proposing to make available retail space at 77 Bunyan Rd (opposite the HUB). This would be allowing the development of a retail complex out opposite the Hub for smaller shops. There is a meeting being held by WDC at the old Farmers building on 2nd Aug 12-2pm. This will give everyone the opportunity to find out more about what is proposed.

Energy OptionsTREE PLANTING - ENERGY OPTIONS have booked Fri the 14th of October for their tree planting this year, and will be aiming for 4000. Well done (in advance!) - more information from Steve steve.hanna@energyoptions.org.nz

A FEW TO WATCH ..

ECONOMY & ENERGY presentation - If you have 20 minutes, take time out to listen to Nicole Foss and her rationale on the Economy and Energy - HERE...  Fairly scary... as are the two new films below...

JUST DO IT - Emily James spent over a year embedded in activist groups such as Climate Camp and Plane Stupid to document their clandestine activities. With unprecedented access, the film JUST DO IT takes you on an astonishing journey behind the scenes of a community of people who refuse to sit back and allow the destruction of their world.  Their adventures will entertain, illuminate and inspire. MORE..  In a similar vein, IF A TREE FALLS documenting the actions of the Earth Liberation Front "is a must-see film". Daniel McGowan, the main subject of the documentary, asks a question that underscores the entire film,  "I'm not suggesting that the path of destruction is the right path," he said. "When you're screaming at the top of your lungs and no one hears you, what are you supposed to do?"

AND ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE...

THE BANK OF REAL SOLUTIONS aims to help bring forward the successful working models being used today to overcome social, economic and environmental challenges in New Zealand. The focus is that which makes us more; resilient, vibrant, healthier, happier and better connected - in our households, our neighbourhoods, regions and as a nation. It brings forward the success stories of the individuals and communities who are; using resources more wisely, reducing financial overheads, fixing social ills, restoring ecosystems, creating jobs, enhancing the aesthetics of where they live, becoming more self-determining. The Bank of Real Solutions is all about the Kiwi can-do attitude...It aims to capture the excitement and inspiration of working by creative determination to overcome that which challenges us.

EQUITABLE FINANCE - Read Thomas Greco's latest newsletter (July 2011) HERE... Into the future, Thomas will be collaborating "on projects that show promise of making major breakthroughs toward interest-free cashless trading, equitable finance, and economic democracy."  Sounds good to me.

ON THE MONEY - How to design successful Community Currencies  3rd -7th Sept 2011, The Park, Findhorn, Moray, SCOTLAND!! [Well, you might be considering a trip to Scotland.. it's VERY nice in September!] Our money system is in crisis. We can try to reform a broken system or we can design new ones to support the transition to a sustainable society. Local money gives us a proven tool to deal with the effects of financial crises, community breakdown, climate change and peak oil. It supports communities to use their own assets to solve local problems, meet local needs and achieve local goals: everything from community gardens to renewable energy and local economic regeneration.
