NotsetGROWING the LOCAL ECONOMY - which way is up?

Monday 12th December
Socialising from 5.30pm
Eastbay REAP
Pyne Street, Whakatane

NotsetFor many in our community, the alternative economy has been quietly blossoming, and our end-of-year event is a shared celebration with Eastbay TimeBank. All TimeBank members and the Green Screening group are invited, so bring along some finger food to share. The usual hot drinks will be on tap, with additional cold drinks sponsored by Bay of Plenty Regional Council, co-sponsors of the Green Screening.

NETWORK & NIBBLE!

NotsetOur new coordinator, Toni, will be joining us from 5.30pm, and will give a short presentation around 6.30pm. Also joining us is Emma McGuirk, who visited earlier this year, and is back for more participation in, and observation of our TimeBank, and eager to engage with members - it will contribute to her postgraduate studies of Time Banking in New Zealand. During the evening, Toni, Emma and I will be sounding you out about a few TimeBank projects for the coming year, and inviting you to add your comments to sheets around the room.  One important topic - thoughts around re-naming TimeBank to represent its wider function as a mechanism for other exchanges. Opportunity will be given to record your interest, if you would like to be part of a working group into next year.

AWARDS!

Toni will be announcing TimeBank Trader of the Year! I'm sure she will have a prize lined up! I'll announce the [GS] DVD Watcher of the Year.... (me.....?!)

COMPETITION!

Come along on the night and share with us your best purchase/exchange/recycle this year, that did the most sustainable good!  If we all bring along a small koha, maybe something from the garden, a recycled gift, something we have made, then we can vote on a winner, and the winner can take the koha. Sharing of stories will be after Toni's presentation, so if you can't stay, plenty of paper will be on hand to record your transaction, and I'll read it out.

FILMs!

Notset

What with all the eating, drinking and socialising, I'm not sure we will have time to show a film too.  Newly released in the States, is GrowthBusters, where one man leads a crusade in his home town to dispel the myth that economic growth is beneficial.. It is 98 mins long, so I'm happy to show a chapter or two, but I think we'll postpone a full screening till a later date, when we can have a healthy discussion around the issues raised.  Both of the following short animations will be available (9 mins and 4 mins):

NotsetSURFING THE WAVES OF CHANGE - If you found The Powerdown Show series a really useful resource, you'll be keen to know that the Cultivate Centre in Ireland are back with a new film 'Surfing the Waves of Change'  This 9 minute animation uses surfing as a metaphor to introduce the concept of community resilience.

NotsetPLENITUDE ECONOMY
  - This fun animation provides a vision of what a post-consumer society could look like, with people working fewer hours and pursuing re-skilling, homesteading, and small-scale enterprises that can help reduce the overall size and impact of the consumer economy. Narrated by economist and best-selling author Juliet Schor. Learn more HERE...

NotsetNEW BOOKFleeing Vesuvius - NZ Edition: Responding to the Effects of Economic and Environmental Collapse was originally published in late 2010 in response to Ireland’s economic collapse. Its 27 authors are now joined by by 12 New Zealand contributors, making this book a compelling tool for all thinking New Zealanders concerned about the future.  It confronts our multiple crises, analysing the many aspects: the financial crisis; the urgent need for food security; the enormous challenge of dealing with climate change, and the looming scarcity of essential resources such as fossil fuels – the lifeblood of the world economy.   Fleeing Vesuvius puts forward solutions that involve changes to our economy and financial system, but they go much further: this substantial, wide-ranging book also looks at the changes needed in how we think, how we use the land and how we relate to others, particularly those where we live.  For more information on the book, visit the Living Economies website.

NotsetThe Koanga Institute has over 700 lines of heritage seed in its collection. Many of these are available for sale, to members. They rely on the support of members, as in many cases, it is not an economically viable business to grow these seeds. They grow them in order to keep them alive, and to ensure that they still exist for future generations. Sign up!
